Janowrimo Day 16 Working the numbers

Wow, we're past the halfway mark for the month and I have a huge amount of writing to do to meet my January wordcount goal of 20,000. The good news is that I have more than 1700 words. The bad news is that I still have 18,248 to go. All hope is not lost, though, because January is a 31-day month. With 16 days left, including today, if I average 1,141 words daily I'll make it.

From the numbers I might conclude that this hasn't been a very successful effort; however, wordcount alone does not make up the life of a writer. The first thing I had to do was reconnect with my characters and my story. That is definitely happening and getting better every day. I attribute that to making the daily effort early in the morning to get something on the page before the hours mount and distractions and events claim my time. Now I need to extend that effort to longer and/or more writing daily writing time. I'm open to tricks, tips, and strategies.

I did no writing yesterday, and just wasted an hour and a half blogging. I hate when that happens.

But I have a quiet afternoon, so I'm going to try to get caught up. I have 3,000 words to do today, but most of it I think I can just use from the previous draft without too much editing.

My semester begins again next week, so I'll be more pressed for time, but also back on more of a regular schedule. When I did my first draft, the only way I could make time to do it was to get up at 5 a.m. I'm not a morning person, so that was really difficult, but I did get into the habit for quite a while.

I was miserably cranky by bedtime, though. ;o)

P.S. I agree that reconnecting with your characters and your story after a long hiatus is important and time-consuming. I know it's taken me a while to get my head back in the game, too.

I did about 1900 revised words today. I have 1100 to go to meet my goal, but need a break. I'm going to walk the dogs. They are a great excuse to get outside.

Great job on the wordcount so far today. Walking the dogs is a grand idea. I wish the weather here was nicer but my dogs are really sick of cold wet rain, even if it's of the misty kind.
